Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a phenomenal way to replace your missing teeth with a strong ceramic crown that looks and feels like natural teeth.

At Marmalade Dentistry, the dental staff offers implants to provide you with the following benefits:

  • Preserve a good facial appearance
  • Prevent the jaw bone from atrophy
  • Improve your ability to speak correctly
  • Help with chewing and eating normally
  • Provide a lifetime of oral support

If you don’t replace your missing teeth with dental implants, your surrounding teeth can shift and become misaligned. Another consequence is that 25% of your jaw bone structure is lost within the first year of you losing your teeth.

Dental implants give you back your smile and prevent facial sagging helping to boost your self-confidence.

What does getting dental implants involve?

The team at Marmalade Dentistry begin by conducting a thorough examination of your mouth using X-rays and impressions to determine gum tissue, spacing, and bone available for the implant.

The team uses a local anesthetic around your implant site to help you be comfortable throughout the procedure. Afterwards, the provider makes a small incision into your gum tissue and places the titanium implant into your jaw bone. After stitching up the incision, the first stage of the implant surgery is complete because it’ll take three to six months for your jaw bone to fuse with the implant prior to moving onto the next stage.

Once your bone and implant are permanently attached, you’ll come back to Marmalade Dentistry where the provider places an abutment, a mini toothlike structure, onto your implant. The provider then cements your new tooth, called a crown, onto the abutment.

What can I expect after receiving dental implants?

To ensure your dental implants last a lifetime, you should care for your implants the same way you would your natural teeth by brushing, flossing and using mouthwash daily. In addition, it’s important to have your semiannual dental exams to make sure your oral health is optimal.

You may experience some temporary minor bleeding, pain at the implant site, or swelling of your gums during any of the dental implant stages. The Marmalade Dentistry staff recommend you rest and not engage in any strenuous activity for the first 24 hours following your surgery.
